Our hockey programme aims to provide an environment in which every student has a rewarding experience. The high quality of our coaching and excellent facilities enable players to fulfil their performance potential in both the indoor and outdoor format of the sport; whilst providing a setting to foster the traits of good sportsmanship, leadership and the appreciation of fair play in any contest, whether winning or losing.
We have an exceptional team of teachers and coaches led by the Head of Hockey, Jon Peckett (former England Great Britain international), Glenn Kirkham (Former England and Great Britain international and Double Olympian) and Helen Richardson-Walsh (Four time Olympian and Olympic Gold and Bronze medallist). The staff have a passion for the sport and are committed to delivering a successful and enjoyable hockey programme for all players across all ability levels. Many of our coaches are also Club members in the Cambridge area which greatly assists with the integration of pupils into the Club system.
In Year 7 and Year 8, our emphasis is on enjoying the game; players are encouraged to relish the challenge of learning new techniques and honing core skills with regular opportunities for 7-aside match play.
From Year 9 to the Upper Sixth, we teach the 11-a-side version of the game,, with greater focus on tactical awareness and developing successful team play. The importance of combining athletic development and skill advancement is paramount to success within the sport and players look forward to representing the School teams in their weekly fixtures.
Elite performers participate in the Perse Elite Sports Programme. This has been established to provide the support they require to grow their ambitions within their sport and succeed in their academic studies. Former student, Tessa Howard, has represented international teams (England U16, U18 and U21).
In Years 7 and 8, we have eight girls’ teams (four in Year 7 and four in Year 8) allowing every pupil the opportunity to play in at least one school fixture. In Years 9 and 10 we field three teams, Year 11 two teams and then 1st, 2nd, and 3rd XI teams in the Sixth Form.
All teams play competitive outdoor fixtures against a comprehensive and strong fixture list. Schools on this circuit include the many independent schools within the region and also Oundle, Oakham, Uppingham, Ipswich, Whitgift and Framlingham.
We enter all National School competitions at U13, U14, U16 and U18 level with a proud tradition of success at County, Regional and National levels.
During the Michaelmas term we place greater emphasis on indoor hockey across all age groups and enter the U16 and U18 National Schools Championships, as well as playing friendly fixtures against other local schools and clubs.
