We want each student to find a sport they enjoy enough to pursue after leaving school. We strive for excellence both in performance and attitude, and cater for everyone – regardless of ability – by providing a very high standard of coaching, facilities and opportunities to train and compete.
We field around 160 teams each year and play on average 450 matches per term. We aim high but perhaps more importantly foster the sporting values of sportsmanship, good conduct, respect for officials, discipline, reliance, leadership, teamwork, winning honorably, losing graciously and simply having fun.
Our core sports are cricket (girls and boys), hockey (girls and boys), netball, rugby and tennis (girls and boys). Students have three to four hours of timetabled games sessions each week, as part of the curriculum, in which to develop their prowess in these sports.
- Talented individuals
Pupils who show a keen interest in their sport are encouraged to join local clubs and those demonstrating high potential are put forward for regional assessments. In recent years students have gained county, regional and even international honours. In 2017 a female student played for the England U21 girls’ hockey team, while a male student played for England U18s rugby. We also have students who regularly compete at a national level in trampolining, orienteering, table tennis and cross-country.
We have strong links with Northampton Saints rugby academy, where we have a large number of boys playing in the EPDG, and several members of staff who coach at JAC and JRPC girls’ and boys’ hockey. A number of pupils are in the England Netball Performance Pathway programme, participating in Satellite, County and Regional academies each week. We also have excellent county cricket links (both boys’ and girls’).
We provide extra coaching and support year round for our most talented students through the Perse Elite Sports Programme. Students on the programme work closely with a mentor, have access to international standard testing facilities, receive supervision and evaluation of their training schedules and have the chance to learn from experts in sports science on topics such as diet, psychology, training methods, injury prevention and time management.
